As my email before, today is no different. I want to try to write the something important for me.
Of course by writing this newsletter I hope my English will improve tremendously.
And for today newsletter, I want to go over about a world that has various uses In the English language. That word is “Would”
The word “would” has six basic functions. I’ll try to explain each one and give you examples.
v The word “Would” is used to indicate imagined situations.
For example:
Ø If I were rich, I would over all over the word.
Ø If I were you, I wouldn’t smoke. It’s really not good for you.
Ø I would drive to my hometown if I had a car.
v This word is used to indicate frequent actions in the past. This usage has same meaning as “Used to”
Ø My family and I would have breakfast together every Sunday when I was young.
Ø After school, I and my friends would play video games.
Ø In the 1950s and before that, woman would stay at home with the child and the man would work.
v The word “would” if used with “like” to express desires. In this case “would like” is more polite way from “want”.
Ø Would you like something to drink? Yes, I’d like to drink orange juice
Ø I’d like you to dome a favour.

v This word is used as the past tense form of “will” in reported speech not direct speech.

Ø Will you help with my project?

Ø He said he would never smoke
Ø She asks me if I would help her with her project.
v This is used as a polite form of the word “will”. This form is used when making requests.
Ø Would you able to help me this afternoon?
Ø Would you please stop tapping your pan on the table? It’s bothering me.
Ø Do you think Budi would be able to work over time tonight? We really need her.
v The word “would” is used with a verb in questions in order to make the questions sound softer and more polite.
Ø How long would it take to drive to Osaka? (More polite form of “How long does it take to drive to Osaka?”)
Ø Who would that be? (More polite form of “Who is that?”)
