The Difference between "because" and "since"

Hi All,

How are you today? Super? I hope so.
Lately the weather is rainy. Don’t forget to keep your healthy so you can do your activity with enjoy and happy.

Few days ago I confused when I want to talk about something using word “because” and “since”.
I think this is very easy for all of you, but it is different for me as I said before.
So the topic for today’s newsletter is “the difference between because and since

Ok. No problem, I hope by writing the article about it, I will understand and the article can increase your knowledge.
Let’s start.
>>>>>>>

Generally speaking, we use “because” to state the reason for something that the listener and reader doesn’t know, or when it’s uncertain if they know or not. While “since” we use it to emphasize the reason for something that is already known for listener or reader.
For example:
Ø  I went to Jakarta because I wanted to visit my friend there.
Ø  Because my best friend lives in Jakarta. I often go there to visit him.
Ø  Since my best friend lives in Jakarta, I often go there to visit him.

Ø  You shouldn’t let your children play around here because it’s a dangerous area.
Ø  Because this area is a dangerous area, you shouldn’t let your children play around here.
Ø  Since this area is a dangerous area, you shouldn’t let your children play around here.

Ø  I’m really nervous because this is my first time to give a presentation at work.
Ø  Because this is my first time to give a presentation at work, I’m really nervous.
Ø  Since this is my first time to give a presentation at work, I’m really nervous.

v  So in the examples above I first used “because” in the middle of sentence. This indicates that the speaker thinks they are stating a reason that the listener doesn’t know.

v  After that we used “Because” in the beginning of sentence, this indicates that the speaker isn’t sure if the listener knows the reason or not.

v  Finally, I used the word “Since” in the beginning of the sentence. This indicates that the speaker thinks they are stating a reason that the listener already knows.

This statement about using “because” at the beginning of the sentence is not strict rule, but just opinion. It is a good guideline for when to use “because” or “since” at the beginning of the sentence.

Thanks and regards

Narupi
